Why AimPutt Uses a 1.2° Start-Line Tolerance — Training Success, Not Failure
A putting gate should build confidence, not frustration.
At AimPutt, we believe successful putting practice should develop confidence, consistency and repeatable skills.
That’s why our 80 mm Start Gate, positioned 3 feet (91 cm) from the ball, provides approximately ±1.2° of start-line tolerance when using a standard golf ball.
Some putting gates are designed with extremely narrow tolerances, sometimes below 0.5°.
But is making practice harder always making the golfer better?
We don’t believe it is.
Why 1.2°?
When a standard 42.67 mm golf ball is struck towards an 80 mm gate positioned 3 feet away, the available clearance corresponds to approximately 1.2° of error either side of the intended start line.
This means the golfer must deliver the ball through a relatively narrow window.
It’s important to understand that this measures ball start direction, not putter-face angle.
The gate provides immediate feedback about whether the ball is travelling sufficiently close to the intended line.
Why We Don’t Aim for Less Than 0.5°
A gate with a tolerance below 0.5° can be useful for advanced precision testing.
However, AimPutt was developed with a different training philosophy.
We want golfers to experience success repeatedly, rather than spend their practice sessions constantly hitting the gate.
When a player consistently rolls the ball through the AimPutt gate, they’re developing a repeatable ability to start the ball within a defined directional window.
Repeated success can help reinforce confidence in their setup, alignment and putting routine.
The objective isn’t to make every putt a difficult examination.
It’s to create a practice environment where successful repetitions help build a skill the golfer can trust.
What Happens When You Consistently Pass Through the Gate?
Imagine practising 30 putts from the same position.
At first, perhaps only 15 pass cleanly through the gate.
As you practise, you begin to understand your setup, your perception of the intended line and how your stroke influences the ball’s starting direction.
Eventually, 25 or more putts might pass through.
That’s meaningful feedback.
You’re demonstrating improved consistency within the gate’s tolerance.
Of course, passing through the gate doesn’t guarantee that every putt will be holed. Green reading, pace and distance also matter.
But it does show that you’re developing greater control over one important part of putting: starting the ball on your intended line.
Train Success. Build Confidence. Improve Consistency.
At AimPutt, our philosophy is simple.
We don’t believe the most difficult training aid is automatically the most effective.
A training aid should challenge the golfer while allowing enough successful repetitions to encourage learning.
Once a golfer can consistently pass through the 80 mm gate, they can increase the challenge by varying their distance, practising different putts or introducing a narrower gate where appropriate.
The goal is progressive improvement, not constant failure.
And when the gate is removed, the player should be working towards retaining the confidence and consistency developed during practice.
THE AIMPUTT GATE DISAPPEARS. THE LEARNING DOESN’T.
TRAIN YOUR PERCEPTION. BUILD YOUR CONFIDENCE. HIT WHAT YOU SEE!!
